About the Author
Beatrix has created some of the best-loved characters in children's literature. Her books have never lost their popularity and, today they sell in their millions annd translated into numerous languages.
Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866 and born to wealth and privilege. She studied art and natural history as a young woman. She acquired her love and knowledge of the countryside during family holidays, at first in Scotland and then in the Lake District. She started her career as children's author and illustrator in 1901 when she was thirty-five. For the last thirty years of her life, writing and illustrating gave place to a second career as a sheep farmer and countryside conservationist. She became one of the most admired Herdwick breeders in the region and won prizes at all the local shows. In 1930 Beatrix became de facto land agent for the Trust, managing some of their farms, as well as her own, over a vast section of the Lake District.
