We love books in our household, as evident by our overflowing bookshelves. We also appreciate how difficult it can be to find time to go to the bookstore when you have young children, which is why we started a Book Subscription program for Ages 1 to 5 years (toddlers to preschoolers).

Receive books once a month to yourself or your loved one for 3 months. The selected books will be a mix of learning (eg. alphabet and counting books), activity, and fiction books; with a mix format of paperback, hardback or boardbooks. Most of the selected fiction books are aimed at shared reading. Postage is included in the subscription price.

If you prefer an ongoing monthly book subscription, please refer to our Book Subscription page for further details.

Please note: this subscription program is only valid for delivery within Australia.

Benefits of Shared Reading

It is commonly known that reading is highly beneficial to childhood development, and a good practice to start reading to children from an early age.

Research has typically found that shared reading experiences are highly beneficial for children. Reading and sharing stories can:

  • help children become familiar with sounds, words, language and the value of books
  • help children with reading comprehension and increase vocabulary
  • help children develop early literacy skills, such as the ability to listen to and understand words
  • spark children's imagination and stimulate curiosity
  • help learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make-believe’
  • help children understand change and new or frightening events, and also the strong emotions that can go along with them

Reading stories with children has benefits for the grown-ups too, the special time spent reading together promote bonding. This is important for developing a child's social and communication skills.

Tips for sharing books with babies and young children from

  • Make a routine and try to share at least one book every day. A reading chair where you’re both comfortable can become part of your reading routine.
  • Turn off the TV or radio, and find a quiet place to read so your child can hear your voice.
  • Hold your child close or on your knee while you read, so she can see your face and the book.
  • Try out funny noises and sounds – play and have fun!
  • Involve your child by encouraging talk about the pictures, and by repeating familiar words and phrases.
  • Let your toddler choose the books when he’s old enough to start asking – and be prepared to read his favourite books over and over again!
  • If you have older children, they can share books with your younger children, or you can all read together. Taking turns, asking questions and listening to the answers are all important skills that will help your child when she starts learning to read.
